British households pour 18 million litres of cooking fats down their drains every year
Pouring money down the sink
As a consequence of Britons quite literally pouring oil down their drains, they’re doing the same with their money. Indeed, the damage caused by cooking fats to drains results in an average repair bill of £80. And with one in four households (24%) having to fork out for such repairs - it’s enough to cause a sinking feeling. There is also the additional cost that is added to your water bill caused by unclogging the solidified oil in sewage systems.
Southern Water’s website says
The Sidmouth Fatberg
Something is lurking under Sidmouth.
Devon’s largest ever fatberg has been discovered in a Sidmouth sewer under The Esplanade.
Longer than six back-to-back double-decker buses at 64 metres in length, it is the biggest discovered in our service history and thought to be one of the largest found so close to the sea.
It is formed from everything that has been flushed or poured down the sinks of Sidmouth that shouldn’t have been, including wet wipes and fat, oil and grease.
